ELECTRICITY HINTS

It pays to see what electricity offers are around and what has changed with your current supplier. We have been with Dodo power since 2012 and quite happy with them. At the time they were the cheapest supplier with good rates, 15% pay on time discount which outweighed that they didn't pay for the small amount of surplus solar power we generated.

Did a check of all suppliers at the link below and Dodo is still near the top however they now give 20% pay on time and 11.6c / kwhr exported. Quick email to Dodo and we now get that too.

Maybe your electricity / gas supplier has a better offer?

Maybe there is a cheaper supplier? Changing is easy. Energy is like petrol stations these days - brand loyalty is dead, buried and cremated

How to check:
- Have a recent electricity bill handy.
- then go to the government site
www.energymadeeasy.gov.au and enter the details
- then, on the results, click 'estimated bill with all discounts' so it sorts prices lowest to highest

Even if you are loath to change suppliers, just intimating that you are strongly considering it usually sharpens their pencil.

What does "POP" and "SMTP" stand for?

These are terms used to define email protocols for receiving and sending email. POP (POP3) stands for Post Office Protocol and is used for receiving email from an email server. SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transport Protocol and is the Internet standard for sending email.

How to open an email in a particular program

For this exercise will use the CCN  and open it in M.S Word

  1. Open Outlook Express and highlight the  CCN

  1. Holding down the left button on your mouse drag the email to your desktop.

  1. Right click the email and from the resulting window choose Open With

  1. If  Microsoft Word  is there you can click on it.  If it is not there click on Choose Program. Find Word from the list of programs and click on it.

Note: the next time you go to Open with Word will be there.

  1. If by chance the program you want is not there you can click on the Browse  button to look further.

Once you have open up the CCN in Word you can then copy and paste a particular item into another Word document to be filed away.

Or you can delete all the stuff you don't want and save what is left to a folder in Documents.

Why won't some DVD's play on T.V.?

One issue could be that your disc type isn't compatible with your DVD player. Some DVD players will only play DVD+R or DVD+RW discs and some only play DVD-R or DVD-RW. Check your DVD player's documentation to find out what type of DVDs it plays or go to the manufacturer's website to find the information.

It's also possible that your disc quality is too low. Some DVD players won't play a disc if it's not high quality or in good shape.

Also make sure you are actually burning a DVD to play on a DVD player and not just copying files to the DVD.

Also, the age of your DVD player may be a factor. Newer DVD players will usually play them, but some older models will not. And watch out for labels. Paper stick-on labels might prevent your DVD from playing correctly.

Beyond Word: free alternatives

This is a frequently asked question, but since it comes up so much, I think it's worth addressing again.

"I am thinking of acquiring a new computer but I don't want to invest in still another MS Office program nor do I want to subscription service. I use it for a couple of things from time to time and I do need to be able to open those documents. So it just doesn't make sense for the added cost. Is there still something out there that I can use?"

If you just need to look at and write the occasional document, the WordPad program included with Windows might meet all of your needs. To open, just search for WordPad in your search menu and click on the results.

The layout should seem pretty familiar to Word users.

If you'd like a more complete office suite, fortunately, you've got a lot of choices.
If you don't mind going online when you work, you could use Microsoft's free Office Online Service or Google Drive's suite of office applications.

First, let's check out your cloud-based options:

Microsoft Office Online

Office Online offers the ability to read, create and edit Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote documents. Just log onto Outlook.com with a Microsoft account and start working. If you have an Outlook.com, HotMail, MSN or LiveMail address, you already have an account. If not, it only takes a few minutes to create one.

Your account also comes with 15GB of cloud storage in OneDrive. Of course, the downside is that it is cloud-based. So you will need an Internet connection to work. The up side is that since it's cloud-based, you can open it on any computer. These are fully-functional Office documents that you can save to your computer and that will open in other versions of Office.

Google Drive

Google Drive is free for anyone with a Gmail address and offers the ability to create documents, presentations, spreadsheets, forms and also comes with a basic drawing program.

Google Drive also offers 15 GB of free cloud storage. Like Office Online, it is cloud-based. You'll need an Internet connection to work, but you also have the flexibility to access your documents from other computers or devices.
If you'd rather download your office suite, consider the following:

OpenOffice
OpenOffice is an open-source software suite that handles word processing spreadsheets, graphics, databases, and presentations. You can install it on as many computers as you like and you don't need to be tied to a particular e-mail service to download. You are also free to use it for your business or home with no restrictions. It is created and supported by volunteers. Versions of OpenOffice are available for Windows, Linux and Mac OSX (x86-64 only).

LibreOffice
LibreOffice also offers the ability to create and edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations as well as make basic graphics and charts. If is compatible with Microsoft products and is absolutely free.
You can install LibreOffice on as many computers as you wish. It is available in both a "Fresh" version with new features and a "Stable" version. You can run LibreOffice on Windows, Mac and Linux systems.

WPS Office Suite
This freeware Office Suite offers a word processor, spreadsheets program, and a presentation program and supports saving files in the DOCx and XLSX formats for Windows compatibility. It is available for Windows, Android and Linux systems.

HOW TO SET HOME PAGE IN MICROSFT EDGE

Microsoft has vastly simplified setting home page. To set a home page in Edge, follow the instructions below:

Click on Edge's settings icon (3 dots). From the drop down settings menu find "Open Microsoft Edge with" and click the down arrow.

From the "Open Microsoft Edge with" drop down menu, select "A specific page or pages".

Type the URL (Web address) of the site you want to be your home page (below we used our Cloudeight Start Page URL which is http://thundercloud.net/start/ )…

And don't forget to click the Save icon (see below) or all your work will be for naught.

(Next week we will have a look at Cloudeight's hint on how to set Home page in  Chrome and the following week on Firefox ~ Annette)

Well folks that's it for another week.

Until next time this is your Secretary signing off
