 Ebay TIPS

The following on from Keith's talk last Information Day, below are some  tips sent in by, member, Teresa Whitby:

  • If goods from overseas are under $1000 then – no import duty/tax
  • Banned items – e.g. tobacco, alcohol, guns
  • Combine items in the one sale may give a discount
  • Multiple items from the one seller can give reduced postage cost
  • Some sellers will deliver to lockups – Woolies, Big W
  • Try 'Make an Offer'. Worst that will happen is a knockback
  • Try 'sniping' when bidding (i.e. bidding in the last few seconds of an auction)
  • Keep an eye out for frequent specials. Typically 5-20%. There is usually a code word that you enter when completing the sale.

·        PayPal will reimburse costs of returning an item. There are a few conditions. Up to 8 returns per year, $45 maximum per return. PayPal members need to logon and activate this feature.

(Thanks Teresa your Tips are very much appreciated.~ Annette)

Say No to All

Have you ever been doing something in Windows that involved multiple files? If so, you've probably come across a message similar to this at one time or another:

Notice how there's an option for "Yes to All", but no button for "No to All"? What gives? I'm not going to be sitting here rapidly clicking "No" all night, am I?

Well, the good news is that if you find yourself in this situation, all you need to do to get "No to All" is hold the Shift key when you click "No".

It's that easy! Just make sure you know what you're saying no to in the first place!

What's The Difference Between Tablets & eReaders?

Check out this handy comparison below:

eReader

Brands: Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Kobo eReader, Sony eReader

Screen Size: 5 to 7 inch depending on model.

Screen Technology: eInk which simulates paper, uses very little power and is not as reflective as LCD.

Price Range: $69 to $179

Connectivity: Wi-Fi, 3G Versions available (extra upfront charge applies)

Battery Life: Up to 8 weeks of use (at half hour a day.) Two months on standby.

Limitations: Dedicated to reading and very basic web browsing of dictionary/encyclopaedia sites. Black and white screens with slow refresh. Most eReaders support purchases only from the manufacturers online site for paid books.

Tablets

Brands: Apple iPad, Google Android, Microsoft Surface, etc

Screen Technology: Full colour LCD very fast refresh and good viewing angles however glass coating produces glare.

Screen Size: 7 to 11 inches depending on model.

Price Range: $149 to $879

Connectivity: Wi-Fi, 3G Versions available (extra monthly charge applies)

Battery Life: Up to 10 hours of active use. Two weeks on standby.

Limitations: Highly reflective screen very hard to see in bright sunlight, requires daily charging, add-on applications can cost extra and are limited to the manufacturers store (or Android Marketplace on Android devices unless side loading.) Cost of device.

Which one should you buy? It simply comes down to choice. These devices make excellent book readers and fantastic on the couch/on the go web browsers and e-mail devices but go to the store, feel one in your hands, play with it and decide because one size doesn't fit all when it comes to tablets.

Make a Gmail shortcut in Windows 7

There are two quick ways to make a shortcut to your Gmail inbox in Windows 7. If you want to be able to access your inbox instantly without using a password, you'll need to make sure that you have your browser set to remember passwords.
Now, you could set up your browser to remember passwords, make that Gmail inbox your browser homepage, then whenever you open your browser, the first place you'll land is your email inbox.
But I've got two other quick alternatives as well.  Open up your browser and go to your Gmail inbox.

If you're using the Chrome browser, you can click and hold on that little box next to the address bar.
'
Drag it out onto your desktop.

Then release. Now you have an instant shortcut to the inbox.

Your other option (which works with any browser and any email inbox) is to open your inbox and select the address from the address bar. Then right-click and choose copy or hit Ctrl+ C.

Next, right click on a blank spot on your desktop and choose New followed by Shortcut.

Then paste the web address in the spot for the location and click Next.

Choose a name for the shortcut and then Finish.

A shortcut will appear on your desktop.

This same process will work with any email inbox and any browser
.

How to Uninstall [Some] Windows 10 Apps

You can uninstall Windows 10 desktop programs from Control Panel > Programs and Features > Uninstall or change a program. You can also use a program like Revo Uninstaller, Geek Uninstaller or another 3rd-party uninstaller to uninstall desktop apps/programs.

But what if you want to uninstall a Windows 10 Store App that came with Windows 10 (or any Windows Store app you installed)?

We are going to use Skype as an example. It's a Windows Store app that comes preinstalled on Windows 10. If you want to uninstall it, you'll find that it's not in Control Panel. You can use a newer version of Geek Uninstaller or Revo Uninstaller to remove some Windows apps… but we're going to show you how to get rid of some Windows apps without using any 3rd-party software.

For this example. We're going to uninstall the Skype app which comes pre-installed on Windows 10.

Open the Start menu and find Skype. Right-click on Skype and choose "Uninstall". See?

Right-click on Skype. Click on Uninstall…

Then verify you want to uninstall it by clicking "Uninstall" a second time. And that's all there is to it.

You can install many preinstalled Windows 10 Store Apps this way, but not all. For example, you can't remove Alarms & Clocks, Windows 10 Mail App,  Calculator, Maps, or Groove Music, and several others. But besides Skype, you can remove Money, News, Paid WiFi and Cellular, Phone, Phone Companion, Sports, Sway, Twitter and more. The best way to find out if you can uninstall a preinstalled Windows 10 Store App is to open your Start Menu, right-click on the name of the app you want to remove and see if ;you have the option to uninstall it.

While we're on the subject of right-clicking on an app listed in the Windows 10 Start menu, it does not only apply to Windows 10 store apps. Did you know you can uninstall any desktop program that you installed, by opening the Start menu, and right-clicking on the name of the program you want to remove. In the example below, I'm going remove a program I installed called "Speedtest"; I don't need it, I can just use the Speedtest site to check my Internet connection speed.

And that's all there is to it. You'll need to close the Start menu and reopen it to see that the program is gone.

ENABLE CHECK BOX FEATURE IN Windows 10
When you press Windows Key + E on Windows 10 you get File Explorer- formerly known as "Windows Explorer".

There are two ways to get to the setting to enable check boxes and both are in the same place. And one way applies to all versions of Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.
This way works in Windows 8x and Windows 10 (all versions)
Press the Windows Key + E key to open File Explorer. Then click on "View" at the top. Now, tick the box next to "Item check boxes" and close the dialog (see below):

Here's a closer view:

Here's a tip for those using Windows 7:

Open Control Panel:
With Control Panel in Category View (not icon view) click on Appearance and Personalization. Then under File Explorer options (or Folder Options) click "Show hidden files and folders"
.

Well folks that's it for another week.

Until next time this is your Secretary signing off

Annette
