Hi Silver Surfers,

Last Friday Alan Hadley made a wonderful comment in relation to photography.

He said: "It is not the camera that takes the Photos it is the Person behind the camera"

I loved it.  I hope it encourages more members to join our photograph group

Google Search

Last Friday I had a Power Point to show at our Information Day. It was entitled

" A exuberania em branco", I had no idea what it meant. So I went into Google search to see if I could figure it out.

I decided to clip on the Google App icon.

To my surprise there was an app called Translate

In the resulting window I typed in my request for translation and received my English answer.

You can even translate something in English to another language.

Say you receive an email in a foreign language you can copy the whole message and Google will translate into English for you.

You may be giving your info away

Millions of people are inadvertently sharing their Facebook information with strangers thanks to what appears to be a harmless holiday game. Maybe you've seen the Santa's Nice & Naughty list post that's been going around.

If you decide you'd like to play yourself and click on the list, you end up at theNametests site, where you can log in with Facebook. It's likely you just clicked on it to log in with your Facebook accounts, create your list, and post.

Nametest offers all kinds of quizzes like Who Really Loves You? What's Your Elf Name? What is Your Christmas Eve? What is Your Secret Weapon? Which Bible Verse Are You?

By logging in and taking these tests, you've given this app an incredible amount of information about you. Let's check it out. I want you to click the drop-down arrow on the top-right of your Facebook page and choose Settings.

Then choose Apps.

All of the apps that you've allowed for your Facebook page will be displayed. Odds are, you'll be surprised by the number of apps with permissions. You can either scroll down to look for apps or use the search function.

I'm going to scroll down and look for NameTest.

Tap on any app to see what permissions it's been granted. If you've taken part in any of these NameTest games, here's what you've shared:

If you've taken part in any of these NameTest games, here's what you've shared:
Public profile
Friend List
Timeline Post - your posts, posts you're tagged in, and posts made on your timeline
Your events
Your photos
Tagged places
Your email address
Yep, you've told complete strangers where you go, allowed them to look at all your photos, told them who your friends are and even let them have a peek at events you may be attending and given them your email address.  That's a great way to invite some spam, huh? Or maybe a burglar?
Always think before you click and grant these types of permission

Can I keep my email address?

First, I want to clarify for those who don't know that changing Internet Service Providers has absolutely no effect on your email address if you use an email provider that's not associated with your ISP. If you have Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, MSN, Livemail, Yahoo, AOL etc..., it has no effect at all. That's why I suggest using an email provider unrelated to the company you get your Internet service from as your primary email address.

If you are using an email address associated with your Internet service provider, you usually can't keep using that address. It's like you moved. You can't keep having your mail sent to that house. Actually, a more accurate description is that you were paying for a P.O. box.  When you stop paying for it, you can't get mail there anymore. As with the Post Office, there's normally a period of time you can receive mail at the address, often between 30 and 60 days, but sometimes as little as a day or two.

While you can forward email from another account to your Hotmail (Outlook) address, that's only going to work as long as that ISP email address is active.

There are actually some ISPs that allow people to keep their email address. (Although, remember that they could change their minds about that at any time.)  You'd have to check with your ISP to see what their policy is.

HOW TO FIND SYSTEM RESTORE IN WINDOWS  10
If you want to use System Restore to restore your computer to an earlier time, just right-click the Start button, click Run and type RSTRUI in the Run box and press Enter. This will start System Restore recovery.

-- OR --

If you're looking for the System Restore application, you can find it in Windows 10 a number of ways, here are two:

#1. (Easy way) In the Taskbar search (Cortana) type System Restore > then click on Create a restore point when it appears at the top of the search results. If you have your taskbar search (Cortana) hidden, just hold down the Windows Key and tap the S key to bring up the search.

#2. Open File Explorer (from the Start menu, Taskbar File Explorer icon, or by holding down the Windows Key and tapping the E key). In File Explorer, right-click on "This PC" (it will be in the left pane) and click Properties. In Properties, click "System protection".

What to Do If Windows 10 Won't Boot (after the W10 Creater Update)

Windows 10 offers you ways you can recover if your computer won't boot. We'll try to cover most of them here.

Windows 10 has the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE), which gives you essential tools for troubleshooting issues and repairing startup problems.

After two unsuccessful startups, Windows 10 should automatically boot up the third time in to Windows 10 RE (Recovery Environment) Advanced Options menu. If it doesn't do that automatically, you can usually force it, by restarting your computer while holding down the Shift key to bring up the Advanced Options menu. We have had several people verify that it worked well for them.

You can also start Windows RE from a Windows 10 installation DVD or USB, from a recovery drive or from the recovery partition on your device, if that option is available.

When you are having problems starting Windows 10 or if you want to do troubleshooting, use System Restore, or use other Windows tools, you can open the Advanced Options menu manually by restarting your computer while holding down the Shift key.

The initial "Choose An Option" menu allows you to click Continue to start Windows normally. This is the option to choose if your system automatically booted into Windows RE (Recovery Environment) because of a minor issue that doesn't need repair. If you click "Troubleshoot" in the "Choose an Option" menu, you'll see options similar to those below:

If you click on Advanced Options (above), you'll see the following menu:

The options above explained…

System Restore

Allows you to choose a restore point created earlier and restore the system configuration.

System Image Recovery

Replaces everything on the computer with a system image created using the Windows Backup utility from Windows 7 or later. (This utility is available in the Control Panel,
via the System Image Backup link, at the bottom of the File History option.)

Startup Repair

If you choose this option, Windows attempts to diagnose and automatically correct common boot problems.

Command Prompt

Opens an administrative command prompt, where you can use commands and command-line tools.

UEFI Firmware Settings

Allows you to change startup settings such as boot order and Secure Boot. On an older PC with a legacy BIOS, this option leads to the Startup Settings menu instead.

That about covers it all.

It might be a good idea to print this out and keep it near your computer … just in case

Well folks that's it for another week.

Until next time this is your Secretary signing off
