Hi Silver Surfers,

It was a great Australia Day celebration at the Wangi RSL on Friday. We were entertained by local lad Leigh Warren.

And the Sailing club had a great Regatta that saw the boats sail around to Pulbah Island and back.  Plus there were the usual raffles in the evening.  Yes! I won another one!!!!!!!!

Google Roman Numerals

I get how to write Roman numerals…for the most part, at least. It's just when the numbers get lengthy that I get confused. Thankfully, though, Google has you covered!

Next time you need to figure out something in Roman numerals, simply head over to Google and type the number, followed by "in Roman Numerals".

Hail Caesar!

You even get a table that you can use to convert by yourself.

HANDY HINT

I was talking to a friend that other day she asked me if I knew the little trick using the scroll wheel on a mouse.

If you working on  a document in, say, in Word and you suddenly realise that you need to do another document all you have to do is:

Hover over the Word icon in the task and press down on the wheel on your mouse  and like magic a blank document pops up.

It beats having to go to the start menu to find the program.  It  is just a click away.

It works in all Office programs and both documents will be available on the task bar until you have finished with them.

THREE WAYS TO RENAME A FILE

1. You can click the file name (not the icon) once to highlight, click a second time to get the flashing cursor, and then type in the new file name. Remember once the title is highlighted you can type in the new one.

 1.       2.

2. Right click the file and choose "Rename". This will highlight the file name allowing you to type in a new one as in (1).

3. Right  click the file and choose  Properties . Type the new name in the name box and then click OK.  If you don't click OK your title will not change.

These three ways applies to , Folders, documents, even pictures and videos

Getting rid of an old Email contact in Gmail

If you're a Gmail user, you may have noticed that it can be tricky to get rid of an old Gmail account. Case in point, an address for a fellow named Chris, who is someone I worked with five years ago, keeps popping up as a suggestion when I type the letter "c" in the "To" field.

To manage Contacts in Gmail, you look for the word "Gmail", just under Google in the top-left of your inbox.

Click the arrow next to Gmail and choose Contacts from the drop-down menu.

You'll notice there's no Chris in sight on my Contacts list.

If the person I wanted to remove was there, I could click on the name and select the three-dot icon at the far right of the name and choose Delete from the drop-down menu.

The problem with Gmail is that is can make it hard to find your Contacts. There are only three people listed under my contacts. But if click the three-line menu in Contacts, I can also choose Frequently contacted. Now there are more people on the list that I didn't see before.

Now there are more people on the list that I didn't see before.

But, still, none of these people are Chris.  What I have to do to find Chris is use the search box at the top of contacts.

I can type in a letter or the name of the contact I'm searching for.

I can click on the contact, select the three-dot icon, and then choose Delete.

Now, when I type the letter C in the "To" field on a new email, Chris no longer appears. Toodles, Chris. It was nice working with you.

Make More Room on Your Windows 10 Taskbar

By default, Windows 10 shows a search box on your Taskbar, which takes up a lot of room for no really good reason, since you can search by opening the start menu and typing whatever you searching for without using a search box. Or you can, if you like, replace the big taskbar search box with a search icon and give yourself more taskbar space for your favorite shortcuts. As far as we're concerned, the taskbar should be reserved for things like shortcuts to your favorite programs, not things like big search boxes. Taskbar search is very useful, indeed, but you don't need the big search box hogging up valuable taskbar real estate, do you?

OK. Look below. Does your Windows 10 taskbar look like this?

Do you want it to look like this?

(Above: Showing the search icon instead of the space-hogging taskbar search on older versions of Windows 10.)

(Above: Showing the search icon instead of the space-hogging taskbar search on newer versions of Windows 10.)

Then all you have to do is right-click in the search box and choose Search –>Show search icon.

You'll have more room on your taskbar and if you want to search for something just click the search icon.

Remember, if you choose to hide the search completely, that's fine. Instead of choosing "Show search icon" you can choose "Hidden". You'll still be able to do searches with ease.  Just do your searches by opening the start menu, then just start typing whatever you're searching for.

And if you're using Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709) or newer, you can save space by removing the "People" button if you don't use it. And you don't use it, do you?

Above: The "People" button taking up space on the taskbar. And below the solution. Right-click on the taskbar and uncheck "Show People button"

Well folks that's it for another week.

Until next time this is your Secretary signing off
