ONE OFF EMAIL READ RECEIPT REQUEST

It should be noted that if you go to Options in your Microsoft email program you should make sure there is no tick in Request a read receipt for all sent messages. This can be very dangerous if you download a scam email. The sender will know they have reached a true email address.

If you have an email that you really need to know if it reached its destination
the following instructions will allow you to do a one off Request

OUTLOOK
Open Outlook and then New Mail. In the resulting window click on the Options Ribbon and in the Tracking Options tick either Request a Delivery Receipt or Request a Read Receipt.

WINDOWS LIVE MAIL
Open Live Mail and then Email Message. In the resulting window click on Delivery and out a tick in Read Receipt.

 PROTECTING YOUR PASSWORD

Personal internet security isn't a one-off operation. Real protection of your system and personal data should include a few minutes of regular maintenance every month or two.
  • Change your password regularly
  • Never share your password with anyone.
  • Choose a password that's easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Pet, partner and children's names are all far too obvious. Ideally, your password will be 6 to 16 characters long and contain a mix of letters in both uppercase and lowercase, and include numbers
  • Make regular checks of supplier websites for your software and operating system, to promptly download the latest security updates
  • Most importantly make sure you  log out of any pages that require you to sign in -. Then close your browser when finished for added protection, especially if you use a shared computer.

Microsoft Windows 7 "Time and Date" on Task Bar

As you know , when you click on the "Time and Date" you get a calendar and a clock.
OK! Who remembers the same thing on Windows XP?  I remember it well! I would like a penny for every time I went in to check an up and coming date or a passed date, I would forget to go back to the present date and could not work our why the wrong date would appear in such things as the CCN.
I am pleased to say that now with Windows 7 it does not matter how many months, back or forward you look at, when you close the calendar down it automatically  returns to the present day and time.  T.G.

DOCUMENT INFORMATION FROM YOUR DESKTOP

Its amazing how much information you can get from items on your desktop. It works in W7
  1. Click on an item on your desk top to highlight
  1. Now point to the item with your mouse and all the document information is revealed
  1. Please note : While that item is highlighted you can point  to anything on the desk to get information
It also works in Document folders etc.

Nifty trick makes Windows 10 easier

One of the annoying things about Windows 10 is that some of the settings you want are under Settings but others could be found under Control Panel.
There's a secret trick that lets you access all of your settings. It's called God Mode. All you need to do to activate it is make and name a folder. Start by right-clicking on a blank spot on your desktop, choosing Folder and then New.

Rename the folder with this text:

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

The text before the period ( . ) sign can be whatever you like. GodMode is a common name but you can call it TammyMode or SecretMode. Whatever the name, you'll now see this icon on your desktop.

Double click and you'll see of your settings options in alphabetical order.

Scroll down and check them all out. Troubleshooting is an especially helpful one. Look at all the choices there.

Just click on any of the settings listed to open them. You can also search God Mode at the top of the Window.

Let's scroll on down to our Internet Options. Right there without having to change tabs or dig into advanced settings, you can see options to block pop-ups, allow cookies, change security, change your search provider, delete your browsing history, manage add-ons, turn off autocomplete, and more.

This setting may be the biggest time-saver in the history of the world. At least the history of the Windows world.

How to Show Selected Folders on Windows 10 Start Menu
Windows 10 makes it easy to choose and show selected folders on your Windows 10 Start Menu. Why would you do this? Because it makes it easy to access the folders  you probably use most often (Documents, Pictures, Music, etc.)
It's really easy to add selected folders to your Start menu in Windows 10. Here's how:
Open Settings (Windows key + i or right click on the Start button and choose "Settings")
In settings click on "Personalization".
In Personalization, click "Start" in the menu on the left. In "Start"… look down toward the bottom of the list on the right and click on "Choose which folders appear on Start".
Now all you have to do is flip ON the switches under the folders you want to appear on your Start menu. See?

Above: You'll see some of the folders I've chosen to show on my Start menu. Here's the entire list:
File Explorer
Settings
Documents
Downloads
Music
Pictures
Videos
HomeGroup (soon to be removed)
Network
Personal Folder (this is your User account folder)
And when I got done turning those switches to "On" this is what I now see along the left edge of my Windows 10 Start menu.
From top to bottom the icons represent:
Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Network, Personal Folder (User folder), File Explorer, and Settings.

So now, if I want to open my pictures folder I can just click on the Start button and click on the Pictures folder icon.
It's easy to add select folders to your Start menu and it gives you a new way to navigate to your favorite or most often used folders.

Well folks that's it for another week.
Until next time this is your Secretary signing off

Things to Do if Your Internet Connection is Down.

1. Open the curtains to see if anything has changed over the past 2 years.
2. You mean there's something else to do?
3. Threaten your ISP with an impeachment vote.
4. Work.
5. Re-introduce yourself to your immediate family.
6. Get that kidney transplant you've been putting off.

Internet Protocol (I.P Address)

I have a Thompson TG782T .  I know it sets up a new IP address each time I turn the modem on.

A few weeks ago I could receive emails but not send them.  I kept getting a message "connection refused" etc.

I contacted Bigpond Help, it was while I was talking to Technical Help I realised what may have happen.

We turned the modem and computer  off then back on and bingo away went the emails.

I do not know if this applies to all Internet Providers but I know all Telstra/Bigpond modems use what is called Dynamic I.P address system which allocates  a new  I.P address every time it is turned on.

Telstra have told me it is for safety reasons so your emails can not be tracked by hackers.

So, if you have a Telstra Modem remember to turn it off at night with your computer. When you turn it on next day you will have a new I.P address.

If you get a message "connection refused etc" when trying to send an email:

  1. Turn off the Modem
  2. Turn off the  computer
  3. Wait a few moments restart computer and modem

You should now have a new I.P address and your emails should go.

    APPLY VERSUS OK

This following tip applies especially to me, I always click Apply and then OK – that's because I am a creature of habit and it's hard to break old habits.

When should you hit Apply and OK?

Hitting OK will apply the changes that you want made, so you don't need to hit "Apply" first.

Where Apply comes in handy is when you are making a change to your desktop (theme, colour scheme) or Display Properties (screen resolution, colour quality) and you want to check the result without exiting out of the control.

Another time when you could use Apply is if you want to make multiple changes in a particular area but want to test the affect of each before proceeding.

Some people just feel more secure hitting Apply before OK. If this is you, then click away.

Bring back a missing Start Menu in Windows 10

If your start menu has gone missing in Windows 10, it may be because your user account settings are corrupted. Other symptoms of this issue would be problems accessing the Windows Store. Let's take a look at how to fix it.

Normally the best way to find Settings is to type it in the search box and click on the results or select it from the start menu.

Or you can right-click on your desktop and select Display Settings.  Once you are in Settings, just choose Home at the top left.

Once you're in Settings, choose Accounts.

Choose Family & other users.

Select Add a family member.

Pick Add an adult. You can use an alternate e-mail address for this now instead of your Microsoft account.

Windows will walk you through the setup, just make sure you don't restrict the account. Once the account is finished, just log on to your PC and see if you can access the Start Menu.

Play nearly anything with VLC Media Player

My husband recently got a new PC. He was trying to watch a movie on it and was frustrated to find out that he couldn't. Hence the text below:

A lot of people are frustrated to find that Windows 10 doesn't have a built-in program to allow you play DVD movies.  But it isn't just DVDs that can cause you problems with playback.

I worked for many, many years in television and the many different types of video files were the bane of our existence. A commercial made on a particular editing system would refuse to open on another one. Sometimes a file would refuse to open on the same system running a different version of the software. Where it really caused a problem was when we tried to open surveillance video provided to us by various law enforcement agencies. Every single one of them used a different format. Good luck finding America's most wanted when you can't open the video.

Thankfully, a very wise engineer introduced me to VLP. It's free and I've yet to find anything it won't open. VLC Play was developed by VideoLAN organization, a non-profit the promotes free, open-source multimedia solutions. You can choose to donate if you wish, but it's not required.

And you can get it for Windows,Mac and Linux! It's also available in the Android and Apple app stores.

To download, click
https://www.videolan.org/

You'll be asked if you'd like to make a donation, but it's voluntary. After you use it and see how great it is, go back and give them a little. They certainly deserve it for this program.

Then run the program from your downloads folder. You'll need to give it permission to install.

Follow the instructions of the installation Wizard.

VLC is now ready to go! There are no ads, spyware, or tracking software in VLC.

It's pretty straightforward and easy to use. You'll  find a pretty extensive support section by
clicking here.

Peek at Your Desktop in W10

Did you know if you click the very far right edge (to the right of the clock) you will go to your desktop? Indeed you will.

Now how would you like to peek at your desktop just by hovering over the far right edge of your taskbar?

Well, it's simple to do.

For Windows 10 Creators Update (and newer)

If you're using Windows 10 Creators Update [version 1703] or newer, right-click an empty space on your taskbar and choose "Taskbar settings".

Under "Use Peek to preview the desktop when you move your mouse to the Show desktop button at very right edge of the taskbar', turn the switch to "On". Once you do, you can peek at the desktop without actually going to the desktop. If you want to go to the desktop, you can click the Show desktop button at the very far right edge of your taskbar. Hint: You can get back to the desktop by pressing the Windows key and tapping the D key too.

Well folks that's it for another week.

Until next time this is your Secretary signing off
