Hi Silver Surfers,

Last Friday we had a very successful Christmas break-up get to together with forty members attending. The food was great and the entertainment by Wangi's own Leigh Warren (Country Music Outlaw) was wonderful.

SKYPE HINT

If you are using Headphones with Microphone there is no need to pull the headphone out from the USB port so you can hear a ring if away from the computer.

1.      Click on Tools then choose  Options  in Skype

  1. Then in the General Tab choose Audio setting

  1. In the Ringing option make sure your computer speaker system is the default and then tick the box Ring P.C Speaker
  2. Don't forget to click on Save before you close

Another useful hint is:  If you use a nickname, when you invite people to your contact list make sure you include a note, as requested, and you use your real name so the person at the other end knows who you are. I have received a few invitations and as I did not know who the person was I had to ignore the invitation.

Windows Defender scam - how to fight it

Another day. Another Microsoft tech support scam. (or two) I will give these crooks a bit of credit for this one, at least they put some effort into it. This one combines elements from several different kinds of scam. It includes a malicious software installer, a fake blue screen of death, and a fraudulent attempt to sell you a Windows program for $25.

The good folks at Malware Bytes first reported on the scam, which involves a program called Troubleshooter. Troubleshooter gets on your PC via a seemingly legitimate software installer app. Here's how it works.  It shows you a fake blue screen of death (the screen that indicates that your PC has crashed and is having some serious problems.)  Then it pops up a warning that the error can't be fixed.  The example below is courtesy of Malwarebytes.

You'll then see a window that says the errors couldn't be fixed and that they recommend that you buy Windows Defender Essentials. That's a combination of the name of two actual programs Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials.

They're only charging $25 for this alleged software, which is clever. That's a low enough price to tempt people and to also make people believe it's legitimate and assume that scammers would go for more money. These people are obviously hoping to make it up in volume.

If you try to just close the program, you'll get a scary warning that an application is unable to start correctly.  If you've been hit with this program, here's how to get rid of it. you'll need to start your PC in Safe Mode and open the Task Manager using Ctrl + Alt+ Delete. Then click the File tab and choose New Task (Run) from the drop-down menu.

Then type %temp% in the Run window and hit OK.

When your Temp folder opens, scroll down and look for a file calledcsrvc in the folder. Click to open it and look for an executable file called Troubleshoot. Delete it.

You'll have to go back to the task manager, click File and run a new task. This time type services.msc. Don't forget to click OK.

Look forcsrvc on the services list. Right-click on it and choose Properties from the drop-down menu.

When the Properties window opens, you'll want to click the arrow next to Startup type and choose Disabled from the drop-down window. Don't forget to click OK.

Using Ctrl+Alt+Del, reboot your PC.  Wait, we're not done! You'll need to press Ctrl+Alt+Del again and run a new a new task once more. This time, type in explorer.  Once again, don't forget to hit OK.

You should now be able to access your desktop. Now you can either go to  Uninstall/Change programs and remove a program calledadwizz.

Malwarebytes suggests downloading their software to completely remove the malware and I agree.  You can download a free version, by
clicking here. Once you install it, just click Scan now.

Also, if you fell for this scam, make sure to contact PayPal or your credit card company and cancel your payment to the scammers.

How to Set a Home page in Chrome

Open your Chrome browser.

Click the Chrome Settings icon (top right – three vertical dots … see below):

From the drop down menu which appears, click "Settings" (see below):

Under the heading "On startup", tick the circle next to "Open a specific page or  set of pages" then click on "Add a new page"(see below):

Under add a new page, type the address of the site you want to be your home page. For example, our home page is http://thundercloud.net/start/ .

After you type in the address of the site you want as your home page, click the "Add" button.

Now close Chrome and reopen it,  Whatever site you typed in under "Add a new page" will be your browser's home page

(Next week we will have "How to set your home page in FireFox.~Annette

Have You Tried Windows 10's Photos App Yet?

First, click on the Start button and scroll down until you come to "Photos" Click on "Photos".

The first time you open "Photos" it will scan your computer looking for images and photos. If you have a lot of images & photos, it will take quite some time to populate. So be patience. Once you've loaded all your photos & images into "Photos", the next time you open it, it won't take so long t

"Photos" gives you a lot control over your photos and images.  You can even click and send them to Windows Photo Editor for editing.

Some features of Windows 10 Photos App:

Windows 10 will try to gather related photos together for you, and put them in albums. Or, you can create albums yourself.

Create a slideshow of your images, or import from your digital camera or other device.

Or share your photos right from Windows 10's Photos app.

If Windows 10's Photos app doesn't find all your pictures, you can tell it where to look.

Click on "Choose where to look" to add images Windows 10's Photos app didn't find automatically.

If you need to edit your photos, you'll need to edit them in a photo editor, or click on "Share" then click on "Photo editor" If you do this you'll be surprised. You'll be using a very easy to use, but powerful editor by Aviary. You have a lot of options for editing, enhancing, and adding effects to your photos & images.

See? A lot of editing options available just using the built in photo editor.

Windows 10's Photo App may not be as feature-full as Picasa, but if you're looking for an easy way to organize your photos & images… and more. Give it a try.

Well folks that's it for another week.

Until next time this is your Secretary signing off
