What's the Windows "Registry?"

Basically, the Windows Registry is a database used to store system and program settings.

Here's what it looks like:

So, for an example, let's say a particular program gives you the option of setting its font. You select a font on its font selection screen and hit OK. When you hit the OK button, *most* kinds of software will make an entry into the registry. Next time you run the program, it retrieves the information you set, in this case the font style.

A peak at where you have been surfing.

If you would like to check up on where you or someone else has been surfing you can do so by checking out Internet Explorer's History files.

You can either  Ctrl+H on your keyboard or click on the yellow star and then the History Tab.

If you click on Today for instance a list of where you have been will appear:

The same applies to 2 weeks ago, last week etc.

If you want to know what you did on a particular site- click on it to expand it.

It should be noted if you have a tick in Delete browsing on exit in Internet Options then you will not have any history to go back on.

How To Enlarge Tool Bar Text In Windows 7

Start by going to the Control Panel

A window will open with your options, Select Appearance and Personalization.

Choose Display

Select Make text and other items larger or smaller.

You can then select a larger size for the items displayed on your screen.

Win 10: create a document

Creating a document in Windows is easy. If you've upgraded from Windows 7 or 8.1 and had a word processor like Microsoft Word installed, it's still there. Or you can use Windows 10's built-in word processor WordPad. Just type WordPad in the search box and click on the result.

You may be surprised to find how much WordPad is capable of doing. When you first open it up, you'll see it looks very much like early versions of Word.

Open a new document and you'll see that you have the standard choices for font and font size.

Just click the drop-down menu to change.

There are options to make the text Bold, Italic and Underlined as well as Strikethrough and Subscript and Superscript Options. Plus color options.

You'll see formatting options for Indentations, Lists & Bullet Points and Line Spacing.

Plus your choice of Left, Center, Right and Justified alignment.

You can also insert pictures into your document, add drawing from Paint, add Date &  time and insert objects.

It also offers editing options like Find, Replace and Select all.

For many people, WordPad provides all the word processing power they need

Proplems with  driver updater program popup

Driver updater programs are on the same plane with malware. While maybe not quite as insidious, they can be just as damaging and certainly as annoying. Driver Updater programs constantly tell you there are new drivers available for your computer.. They may be new drivers that are actually for your hardware, but more often they are not the correct drivers or they are not necessary. Many times installing unnecessary drivers using one of these types of programs may cause serious problems with your PC.

You should never update any drivers on your computer unless you're having a problem with a hardware device. If everything is working well and to your satisfaction, one of the worst things you can so is update drivers for hardware that is working well. The old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies!

Windows Media Player in Windows 10

Windows Media Player is alive and sort of well in Windows 10. You can use it to play most audio file types. But one thing you can no longer do Windows Media Player is watch DVD Movies. For whatever reason, Microsoft has decided that you can't play DVD movies with WMP and that's that.

The good news is there are several excellent free media players you can install on Windows 10 that will play you DVD movies. The media player we recommend and use is one called VLC (Video LAN) media player. It's free and it integrates with Windows 10 seamlessly. It not only plays your DVD movies, it plays virtually all types of audio and video files.

You can download VCL from  http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

It's free and free from malware and tricks.

One you download and install VLC Media Player, you can set it as your default media player for music and video files in Windows 10 on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and newer by going to Settings > Apps > Default apps (or in earlier versions of Windows 10 by going to Settings --> System --> Default apps) and clicking on Music player and selecting VLC from the list. Next, click on Video Player and select VLC from the list.

Well folks that's it for another week.

Until next time this is your Secretary signing off

Annette
