BENEFITS OF AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

It is advisable to move documents, pictures, and music files over to an external hard drive. These files can take up a lot of space, especially WAV, MP3, and Jpegs. This also protects your data files in case something happens to the operating system or your C drive.

To move music files, pictures, etc., just drag and drop or copy and paste from one drive to the other.

It is also advisable to have your Back-ups on an external hard drive. We found out last week that many Laptops , opps! Notebooks (as they are now known) do the Back-up on a partition which means if the hard drive dies the back-ups also die.

You can work on your file from the External Hard drive as you would on your C Drive. All programs on C Drive are accessible to the External hard Drive.

In Windows 7 you can make the various folders on your external hard drive available in the Library. Right click the folder in your external and choose Include in library

You can then choose where you want to include that folder.

As long as your external is turned on you will be able to access any folder that you included in the W7 Library

ITS YOUR COMPUTER.

Don't let ANYONE tell you how your computer should be set up.  What they want and what you want are two different things. Sometimes they have good intentions. Often files go missing; things look different, sometimes even the desktop is changed. How many times have we heard our children say "I know how your computer should be set up, Mum/Dad"

The following  tips are from Cyn's Tech Tips and are used by permission

Cloud backup on Windows 7

You certainly can back up important files like documents and images Windows 7 While you can use services like DropBox with Windows 7, the easiest choice is to use OneDrive.
If you have an Outlook, LiveMail, HotMail, or MSN email or your PC is registered with a Microsoft account, you already have a OneDrive Account.

The account comes with 5 Free GB of storage. You can purchase more or if you're an Office 365 subscriber, your subscription comes with 1 TB of storage.

If you're running Windows 7, you can download the OneDrive app by clicking on the link below.

Download the desktop app for Windows 7 and older

When it asks what you'd like to do with the download, choose Run.

Follow the setup instructions and OneDrive will appear as an option in File Explorer.

You can set it up to sync files with your PC so items like documents and images are automatically saved to both your PC and the cloud each time you save.

Google Drive also offers 5GB of free storage while Dropbox offers 2GB. There's no reason you couldn't have accounts for with all 3.

I like having that cloud storage backup. If something happened to my PC, my documents would be instantly accessible from another device. If my documents were backed up to an external hard drive and there was a natural disaster of some kind, both my PC and my drive could be lost. I like backing things up twice. Once on an external drive and once in the cloud for safekeeping.

System Restore in Windows 10

System Restore is on Windows 10 and it's easy to find. Press & hold down the Windows Key and tap the E key to open File Explorer. Right-click on "This PC" in the left pane of File Explorer, and click "Properties".  click on "System". When System Properties open, click on "System Protection:. It's right there on the left side. Here, we'll show you:

And you'll see not only can you access System Restore from there, but you can also configure its settings from there as well.

(Guess what!  it works in W7 only you choose C Drive  ~Annette)

How to See a List of Files You've Recently Accessed

This tip is for Windows 7, Windows 8x and Windows 10

Every time you access a file or folder in Windows, it's added to a list. But do you know how to access this list? It's easy. Very easy.

Open a Run dialog by holding down the Windows Key and tapping the "R" key. Type RECENT in the Run dialog and press Enter or click "OK".

And you'll see a long list of files you've accessed recently. Mine go all the way back to 3 weeks ago, which was the time I cleaned my computer using the CLEANMGR command which you an also run from a Run dialog. [ Windows Key + R. Type CLEANMGR and press Enter. ]

Windows 10 users will also see a list of recently accessed files and folders appears in File Explorer  –> "Quick Access".

If you want to clear the list of recently access files and folders, do this:

Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.

Type Control Folders  in the run box to open Folder Options and click OK or press Enter. (Note: You can also use Control Panel / Folder Options or File Explorer / Options.)  Under the General tab, under "Privacy", next to "Clear File Explorer history" click "Clear".

So, there you go. Now you know how to see what files and folders have been recently accessed on your computer. And how to clear them. I always love to do this with EB's computer. You should see the kind of stuff she looks at… shocking!

Windows 7 users, please note:  You will see different dialogs than those shown above, but the functionality is the same.

How to create groups for mailing in Thunderbird,

1. With Thunderbird open, click "Address Book: from the Menu
2. Choose "New List"
3. Give List a Name - the name of your group would be great
4. Add all the Contacts you want to send mail to, to the list. Hint: If you type the first letter or two of a person's name or email address you will see it show up in drop down menu and you can choose it from there.

OK. Now that you have your group created, you'll want to send an email to everyone in your group. And here's two ways to do that..

1. With "Address Book" open, click the name of the group you created and then click Write.

2. Or, From main menu of Thunderbird, click Write, and then type in the first letter or two of the name of your group in the "To" field, and click the name to choose it from the drop down menu.

Well folks that's it for another week.

Until next time this is your Secretary signing off
