We welcomed three new members to our meeting on Friday, Marilyn, Helene and Ron. It was Ron's first outing after surgery, so I hope we did not tire him out too much.

We commented on our close-up photos and were shown some large prints of ants, mosquito larvae and other small beasties. Herb brought along more of his camera collection to show us.

The subject for the April meeting will be "Churches", which includes other places of worship

How to get a quickie in Windows 10

Key combination Windows + Shift + S  is a fast way to grab a quick screen shot.

Use the cropping tool to choose the item you want.

It goes to the clipboard, so it's then just a matter of using paste to put it in an email or a Word document etc. Remember that the key combination for pasting is Ctrl + V

I have had the following tip before but a member asked the other day how to do it.

NAMING A BATCH OF PHOTOS.

You have been on a holiday to Queensland and when you get home you want to transfer your pictures on to your computer:

Once transferred into their special folder, instead of painstakingly renaming all the pictures you can batch name them.

Click the first picture then go to EDIT and click on SELECT ALL then press F2 and type , say, Queensland Holiday in and press ENTER all your  pictures will be named and numbered. It saves typing in the names on each picture.

Facebook recovery information

We've been discussing password recovery information for your email recently.  Today I'll look at another valuable communication tool that you wouldn't want to get locked out of, your Facebook account.

If you're using a browser, click the drop-down arrow at the top right of the page and choose Settings from the drop-down menu.

First, look under General.

To the right, under Contact make sure the email address is current. If you want to change or add an additional email address or phone number, click edit.

If you have a mobile number added, Facebook will be able to text you a code to reset your password should you ever get locked out. Once you made the necessary edits, select Save changes.

Click Security & Log In to add additional security measures.

One security option is to choose friends who can help you log back in if you're ever locked out.

Click Edit to the right and then Choose friends.

The people you select as trusted contacts will be able to give you a security code if you ever get locked out of your account.

These contacts must already be on Facebook.  Just type in the name of the contacts and hit Confirm.

Scroll down to Setting up extra security and you can also choose to receive alerts about unusual Facebook log-ins via either Facebook notifications, Messenger, or email.

You can also choose to enable two-factor authentication. That means it will require a code from your phone as well as a password to log in to your account. This makes it difficult for hackers to get into your account from another PC or phone. Click Edit to add any of these features.

Remember, you must keep your email address and phone number up-to-date for any of these features to work properly.

Not Exactly Windows Movie Maker but It Works

We have received a lot of emails about finding a good replacement for Windows Movie Maker. We have kind of fallen behind on that task, but we did take time out to play around with the Photos App in Windows 10. This tip was written using Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709).

Windows Photos App has a feature sometimes referred to as Story Remix. Basically, it's a fairly easy-to-use, if not intuitive app for making videos out of you pictures. You can add music (your own or music included with the Photos app), you choose from a dozen or so themes, you can add titles, effects and filters to each image that you include in your video.  It's not a very intuitive program, but with a little experimenting, you can crank out some fairly nice videos.

We're going to provide you with the basics, and you can take it from there.

Open the Photos app from the Windows 10 start menu or type Photos in the taskbar search and press Enter to open it.

At the top of the Photos app you see a option labeled "Create". Click on it to expand its menu, and choose "Custom video with music".

Choose a theme. There are about a half-dozen themes. Previews are available for all of them. Play around and find a groovy one. (EB told me to say "Groovy"… she's a groovy granny she says….)

Time to make a video? Yes, it would seem so .. you can do these steps in whatever order you like.

To make a video of your pictures, you need to a add pictures… logical right? Click on Add.

When you have selected the picture your video, you  can slide them onto the storyboard. One you have all the images you want on the storyboard, you can drag them around to arrange them, add text or effects, etc.

A closeup of the controls you can use to modify & edit each image on the storyboard.

Here's a sample of what you see if you click on the Motion icon in the storyboard controls.

If you want to add music, click on "Music" and you can add music that comes with the Photos app or you can add your own music… EB likes Conway Bruno and his country polka band.

You can preview your video, go back and edit it, edit all or some of the images, add / remove titles, text, change music, add more pictures, remove pictures and play around until you made a masterpiece.'

One your done you can save the video to your computer – or share it. Just click Export or share for options.

And that's about it. Those are the basics to using the Windows 10 Photos app to create videos from your photos and music.

Well folks that's it for another week.

Until next time this is your Secretary signing off
