clip_image019A Safer Way To Close Suspicious Popup Windows

With all the Scams etc happening I thought it would be a good idea to repeat once again a couple of ways you can get rid of unwanted popups.

One way is to

Tap the "Alt" + "F4" key on your keyboard and the popup will disappear

If you like this one I suggest you make a sign and stick it on your monitor so it is there when ever you need it.

Then there is the  three finger rule

clip_image021   clip_image023  clip_image025

Then click End Task and the popup will be gone.

clip_image026HANDY HINT

Before running any adware or spyware cleaner, anti-virus check, scan disk, defrag or similar program, be sure to delete all your temporary files and empty your recycle bin first. Temp files can really pile up, and your utilities will run much faster if they don't have to waste time checking all those files unnecessarily.

If you are using Internet Explorer go into Tools/Internet Options/ Settings/View Files

Then select all the files and choose elete.

(I went into mine this morning and found 1,598 temp files!!!!!!!!!!)

clip_image028INSERT KEY

Have you ever gone back to change a thing or two while typing and instead of moving the text to the right to accommodate the space, the text was overwritten? You probably ended up having to re-type an entire paragraph because of it.

Sounds like you were a victim of the
Insert key! I would like a penny for every time it has happened to me.

Somehow during the course of your typing, a stray finger accidentally tapped the Insert key. The Insert key is directly above the Delete key.

Tap that Insert key, and you'll overwrite instead of insert. Next time that happens, just tap the Insert key again to get back to normal.

clip_image030Tip on using a search engine

A "meta word" is a pair of keywords separated by a colon (with no spaces) and it works to target your search. For example, the title keyword finds matches in the titles of Web pages, so a search containing the meta word title:seniors will return documents with the word seniors in their titles.

Normally when using search engines, if you were to type the word seniors  in , your search would result in a return of all documents that have  the word senior anywhere in within the document.

clip_image032Five simple rules for spotting a scam

There are some basic truths which, if taken to heart, can protect you from the majority of phone, email, and Internet scams. You may already know them. If you do, feel free to share them with others, especially young people. They're far more likely to fall for scams.

1.     No one can see into your device. If they call or contact you saying there's a problem, it's a scam. Your mechanic doesn't randomly call you at home to say there's something wrong with your transmission. He or she only knows about an issue if you take the vehicle into the shop with a complaint or for a tune-up. Microsoft, Apple, or any other tech company cannot see into your device and know you're having an issue unless you've specifically given them access.

2.     Companies don't call you. If you want to talk to Microsoft about a problem, you'll have to contact them and you'll probably have to wait a while to get someone to talk to you. The only time they call you is if you've called them and set up an appointment for someone to call you back.

3.     Anyone you have an account with already has your account information. They don't need your password or your bank account information to reconfirm anything.

4.     Neither government agencies or computer companies leave threatening messages saying that you only have a few minutes or hours to act or you'll lose your account, face a big fine, or possibly do jail time. That's not how any of that works.

5.     Legitimate companies don't want payment in gift cards, Bitcoin, or wire transfer. Legitimate companies accept credit, debit, or PayPal payments that you can dispute.

Windows Pros and Cons

This week, we're going to take a look at operating systems for laptop and desktop computers. Windows is the most popular choice, but there are other options.
clip_image034

Windows pros:
It feels familiar. If you've been using PCs for thirty years, the operation is still pretty intuitive.
The price is right. You can start out with a new Windows 10 device for less than $300. If you want a powerhouse for gaming or video editing, you can pay a lot more.
You've got a variety of devices to choose from. There are plenty of manufacturers making Windows devices and you could have one custom built to your specifications.
Plenty of software options available from the Windows Store and other sources.
clip_image036
If you have Windows 10, you probably won't ever have to pay for another operating system. Microsoft seems to be switching over to doing things Mac-style by offering the OS with the device and continuing to provide free OS updates on a regular basis as long as your hardware will support it.
Customer support is available from Microsoft for supported systems and there are plenty of books, videos, and other materials available to help you better understand the OS.

Cons
Windows is the most popular target for malware and scammers. It's not that Windows 10 is less secure than other operating systems, there are just more crooks trying to break into it.
Windows 10 PCs sometimes come loaded with unwanted bloatware and trial programs that manufacturers add to cut costs. They can often slow down your PC.
Multiple versions of the OS. Microsoft usually ends up with several versions of each operating system. Home, Pro, S, Enterprise, etc... So any advice or support you find might not apply to your machine. Also, you'll find variations in the way the OS behaves due to hardware configuration and manufacturer. Some Windows machines are elegant and well-built and others are low-end pieces of junk.
I'm choosing not to list among the cons, the fact that Microsoft security support for an OS lasts for 10 years. While many people were disappointed to see support for XP and Vista end, and many more will be sorry when Windows 10 support stops, no developer supports an OS forever. Mac does not and even Linux requires you to upgrade to the latest version of your particular "flavour" of Linux to stay secure.

Pro or Con (depending on your point of view)
When you use Windows, you're completely integrated into Microsoft's systems. You need a Microsoft ID and password. Their cloud storage service OneDrive is integrated with your user experience and you'll be encouraged to use the Edge browser, Office, Windows Store, Cortana, and other Microsoft services.
clip_image038

This allows Microsoft to know a great deal about you. It's also incredibly convenient for accessing documents from other devices and having access to redownload your programs if something happens to your PC.

Windows Font Size Changer

Easily Change Font Sizes in Windows 10 With Windows Font Size Changer

Beginning with Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) and continuing with Fall Creators Update (version 1709) and Spring Creators Update (version 1803) Microsoft removed the settings that let you change the font size for title bars, menus, message boxes, tooltips, palette title, and icon text.

If you're using a very high screen resolution, you may find yourself straining to read the text in message boxes, title bars, etc. after updating to the Creators Update, Fall Creators Update, or the upcoming Spring Creators Update.

Prior to the Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703), Windows made it easy to change font sizes in Display settings.

clip_image040

There are thousands of tips all over the web about editing the registry in order to bring back font size settings options in Windows 10 Creators Update and newer. But editing the registry is not for everyone, plus it's time consuming  — and if you make even a small mistake it can cause big problems.

Luckily for those of you who have updated to the Creators Update or Fall Creators Update (and soon Spring Creators Update) and now find themselves with Windows display fonts that are uncomfortably small, there's a very small (around 50 KB) free program that makes it very easy to change the size of the fonts for title bars, menus, message boxes, tooltips, palette title, and icon text.

It's called System Font Size Changer. All you have to do is download it and run it. It does not install. Just download, unzip and click the exe file to run it. Since it does not install, no worries about malicious stuff like PUPs, malware, bundles or other baddies.  And a really nice feature of System Font Size Changer is that when your first run it, the program will offer to save your current settings – and we suggest you take advantage of that… just in case.

clip_image042

If you want an easy way to change the system font size on Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) and Widows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709)? Then download System Font Size Changer from WinTools. It's free and it will make your life easier.

A note about Font Size Changer on Windows 10 Spring Creators Update

We have tested Font Size Changer on the very latest pre-release version of Windows 10 Spring Creators Update and it works great. Keep in mind that the pre-release versions of Spring Creators Update may not be the same as the final version that will be released to the public.

Well folks that's it for another week.
